British resident William Marsh was permanently paralyzed as a result of food poisoning while on holiday in the Dominican Republic. It is reported by The Sun.
The incident happened in 2018. The man was celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife Katherine. One day, William felt unwell and was admitted to the hospital with stomach cramps and diarrhea. The condition did not improve after the holidays. Already in the UK, he suddenly experienced an attack of paralysis. And since then, William has been confined to a wheelchair.
In 2022, the man sued for five million euros against the travel company TUI, which organized the trip for them. According to Marsh, the poor quality of hygiene and food preparation standards at the hotel are to blame.
Lawyers say the bacterial infection picked up at the hotel caused a rare neurological disease known as Guillain-Barré syndrome. In this disease, the immune system attacks the nerves rather than fighting germs. Travel company TUI denies its guilt.
