The number of tourists in Afghanistan in 2023 increased by 120% compared to 2022.
Last year, 5,200 foreigners visited Afghanistan for tourism, Al Jazeera writes about this. As a result of decades of wars and conflicts, tourism in Afghanistan has declined, although there is now little threat to foreigners in the country in terms of physical safety.
However, travelers still face extreme poverty, dilapidated cultural sites, and underdeveloped tourism infrastructure. The visit of tourists to the country takes place under the strict control of the authorities and without consular support (most embassies were evacuated in 2021). Guests are required to register with local authorities upon arrival in each province, adhere to a strict dress code, and undergo security screening at security checkpoints.
Although the Taliban government is still not officially recognized by any country, it welcomes foreign tourism.
