After a successful start to the tourist year compared to the previous year, the Bavarian State Statistical Office reported a further increase in demand in February in 10,690 open accommodations.
Nearly 1.5 million guests came to the Free State and stayed overnight in one of the Bavarian accommodation facilities.
81.6 percent of the guests in February 2022 came from Germany (February 2021: 85.1 percent) and only 18.4 percent from abroad (February 2021: 14.9 percent), which contributed to the growth of tourism in Bavaria. The situation is similar for overnight stays: here the share of domestic guests is 85.4 percent (February 2021: 84.5 percent), and foreign guests – 14.6 percent (February 2021: 15.5 percent).
Of the nearly 1.5 million guests staying in hospitality industry establishments in February, the majority were about 1.3 million (85.6 percent). The collective term “hotel industry” includes classic hotels, garni hotels, inns and guest houses.
After the hotel industry, the most frequently visited type of establishments are recreation centers, houses and apartments with a share of 6.6 percent of the total number of guests and 12.4 percent of the number of overnight stays. The remaining types of establishments (youth hostels and mountain huts; rest houses, recreation and training centers; campsites; medical and preventive and rehabilitation facilities) accounted for 7.8 percent of the total number of guests and 17.9 percent of all overnight stays in February 2022.
Among the administrative districts, the largest number of arrivals and overnight stays were recorded in Upper Bavaria (about 654,000 arriving guests; about 1.8 million overnight stays) and Swabia (about 278,000 arriving guests; just under 1.0 million overnight stays). The state capital Munich accounts for just under 242,000 guest arrivals and nearly 600,000 overnight stays.
In Germany as a whole, the number of overnight stays in February rose by 161 percent to 18.8 million compared to the forbidden month last year. A year earlier, in connection with the pandemic, a ban on the accommodation of private travelers was introduced. However, the level of the pre-crisis month of February 2020 was still well below 37.3 percent.
