A French tourist has been sentenced to eight years in prison in Iran for a drone photo. This was reported by the BBC News.
Benjamin Brier, 36, was arrested by Iranian police in May 2020. He launched a drone near the Iran-Turkmen border. According to the man, he wanted to remove from a height a local monument – a national park.
The Frenchman was detained for a year and a half, and in January 2022 a court sentenced him to eight years in prison on charges of espionage and up to eight months for propaganda against Islam.
Briere’s lawyer, Philip Valant, said the trial was unfair because the tourist had not been informed of his rights. The man’s family insists on his innocence. According to them, it is used as a tool for political purposes.
