The original experiment should be completed shortly in Denmark – a tourist is returning to his homeland, who left his wife at home for 10 years and went to travel the world to see all the countries. Thor Pedersen began his journey back in October 2014 – and, as the tourist himself said, his goal was to see all the nations. Moreover, he complicated his journey with another requirement – all this time he never boarded an aircraft. Currently, the tourist is in the Maldives, from where he plans to return on a cargo ship, as he arrived there 10 years ago.
According to the Mirror, the tourist was not booked for such a long time when he left Denmark for Germany, which began his journey of almost 375 thousand km – he expected the trip to last four years, based on an average of seven days per country. However, unforeseen circumstances intervened, including the recent pandemic, which shut it down in Hong Kong for two years.
The longest train journey was to Russia – the tourist traveled for five days. His trip also included 351 buses, 158 trains, 43 tuk-tuks, 37 container ships, 33 boats, nine trucks, three sailboats, two cruise ships, one horse-drawn cart, one police car, one yacht, and “countless motorcycles, taxis, metro, minibusses, and trams.
“I have to spend at least 24 hours in the country. What I do is not tourism, it’s like a marathon or flying to the moon,” the Dane is sure. He also explained that the funds for the trip were provided by the energy company, as well as crowdfunding. Thor’s budget was $20 a day. Passports turned out to be another funny waste – a tourist brought 10 of them, “to be sure that he can enter any country without exhausting the number of pages for printing.”
The tourist also said that the final leg of the journey from the Maldives is also likely to take place on a ship and the journey home will take more than a month. He does not plan to travel again but hopes to write a book about his adventures.
