Turkish hotels and beaches are at risk of suffering global geological consequences of an earthquake in Turkey shortly. This is how pessimistic experts assessed the situation in the Turkish province of Hatay, which suffered from an earthquake: there, the sea began to flood the coastal city of Iskenderun.
According to local media reports, the sea began to rise on Tuesday, February 7. At the moment, according to experts, the water has risen by several meters, and the prominent rise of water was observed in the port area. On Mete Aslan boulevard, water spilled over 200 meters, part of the roads was flooded, and the water has not yet reached residential buildings, but some sources are already reporting the evacuation of the population from the threatened areas.
The whole issue, which experts are debating in the Turkish media now, is what the consequences will be. Some experts refer to the fact that the rise of the sea is a temporary phenomenon after earthquakes. However, let us remind you: the catastrophic quake in Turkey occurred in the region’s most seismologically dangerous region — at the point of collision of four plates – the Anatolian, Arabian, Eurasian and African plates. And according to experts, the earthquake “moved” all of Turkey by as much as 3 meters, and to the southwest. This was stated by the Italian geologist Carlo Donioli.
It should be noted that the city of Iskenderun is practically unknown to Ukrainian tourists – many first heard about it after the news about the earthquake, which also caused a strong fire in the port of the city. It is located in the south of Turkey, not far from the border with Syria, on the same Mediterranean Sea as Antalya, beloved by our tourists… True, the distance between the cities on the road is more than 730 km, but if “long-term” ecological processes cause the rise of the sea – there is a certain risk for Antalya and, by the way, Cyprus, which is not so far away.
