The price has already doubled: Turkish hotels are afraid of the new rules and demand their change

The cost of a room in Turkish hotels has already doubled to the “before” level. These statistics were provided by Müberra Eresin, president of the Turkish Association of Hoteliers (TÜROB), created by hotel owners in Istanbul. It is noteworthy that the Turkish expert cited statistics in her speech regarding the government’s plans to introduce a tourist tax in Turkey from January 2023. Hoteliers emphasize that neither tourists nor business has yet fully recovered from the crisis and this measure may scare away travelers from Turkey.

“The average daily cost of a room in Turkey in September 2022 was 142.2 euros. In 2019, this figure was 83.33 euros. The price per room from the total number of rooms in September 2022 was 110.6 euros. In 2019, this figure was 61.9 euros,” said the Turkish expert. That is, the price has almost doubled.

At the same time, Eresin emphasized that the Turkish hotel business “needs a little more time to eliminate the negative consequences of the almost two-year break due to the pandemic.” This is how she justified the need to postpone the introduction of new rules regarding the tourist tax.

We would like to remind you that it is planned to be introduced already next season – and it will be paid for by all means of accommodation without exception – from luxury hotels to campsites. Hoteliers, as expected, object. First of all, the “non-fixed rate” of this tax. It is planned to charge tourists not a specific amount, but 2% of the room price.

Hoteliers call on the authorities to postpone the new law. The request to postpone its implementation for at least a year – until 01.01.2024 has already been submitted to the relevant ministries.
