The beach at the popular Black Sea resort of Şile near Istanbul was closed due to the discovery of dozens of unexploded ordnance, NTV reports.
Suspicious objects at the bottom were noticed by one of the vacationers on the Sofular beach who informed the law enforcement officers about this. The police liberated the coast from people and proceeded to extract ammunition. Divers who plunged into the sea found at least 28 shells, 8 of them were delivered to land.
“As a result of an inspection conducted by the Naval Command SAS Group Command, it was determined that the suspicious objects were cannonballs,” the Governor of Istanbul said.
It is specified that the unexploded mines found will be cleared on Wednesday, August 2.
