One type of tourist has been threatened by the Cyprus authorities with draconian fines and the risk of going to jail. It is primarily about the “party city” of Ayia Napa, but other cities of Cyprus are also introducing events. Tourists who want to supplement their vacation with “almost legal” narcotic substances are at risk of being “handed out” – if a tourist is caught with a can of gas, which is fun, punitive measures will be harsh.
According to the Cypriot press, the problem is that tourists who “got to know” the special effects of nitrous oxide have become a real problem for Ayia Napa and Cyprus as a whole. On the streets of the “club resort” tourists began to meet en masse, lying on the sidewalks – and even on the beaches, “pushing steam from balloons.” While laughing gas, also known as NOS or nitrous oxide, was sold quite legally in Cyprus until recently, it has now been banned across the country.
The fashion for such a “supplement” to recreation was most likely introduced by British tourists who head en masse to Ayia Napa and other Cypriot resorts, “and many of them go crazy while there,” as the media add.
Tourists have been warned that anyone caught with “laughing gas” could now be fined and even jailed. Cyprus has a strict zero-tolerance policy for illegal drugs, including laughing gas.
“If you’re caught with any type of drug, you’ll either get jail time or a big fine. illegal drugs are stricter than in Great Britain”, – such a warning was officially issued even by the British Foreign Office. Tourists were also told that just considering the case in court could take up to two years.
