In New Zealand, they plan to introduce double-decker berths for economy class passengers – for a fee, tourists will be able to travel as “neighbors with higher class seats.”
According to the New York Post, Air New Zealand passengers can use the new service.
“No airline in the world offers economy class passengers full beds. New Zealand Airlines decided to change this and developed a unique Skynest idea. The concept has been tested for five years. The first flights with bunk beds are scheduled for September 2024,” the newspaper writes.
“According to our research, sleep is a key factor in customer service,” Lynn Geraghty, Air New Zealand’s chief account officer, told the Washington Post.
Sleep capsules will be installed on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: they will be in addition to regular seats. Two rows of three beds will be located between the premium economy and economy class cabins. Each bed will be stocked with pillows, linens, earplugs, a reading light, a USB port and an air vent.
“For most people, REM or REM sleep lasts 90 minutes. So a four-hour block allows them to go through two cycles of REM sleep, giving them time to wake up and recover,” they add. MASS MEDIA.
According to Gerati, the exact cost of the service has not yet been determined.
“Most likely, the price of a bed will not exceed 400–500 dollars,” the director of customer service suggested.
