Strong and therefore terrible earthquakes frightened tourists in Izmir and on the outskirts of the resort on the Aegean Sea. According to experts, earthquakes of magnitude 5.1 and 4.3 occurred at 07.00 and 07.09 in the Aegean Sea near the district of Urla in Izmir.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which was also felt in Aydin and Manisa, was 56.18 km from Urla and at a depth of 3.97 km underground. Another earthquake – an aftershock – of magnitude 4.3 occurred in 9 minutes. The second earthquake occurred 57.22 km from Urla and occurred at a depth of 7.16 km underground.
“Terrible shocks were felt in Manisa and Aydin, as well as in Izmir. Fortunately, as a result of the earthquake that occurred in the Aegean Sea and was felt in our city, no damage occurred, “said the mayor of the capital of the municipality of Izmir, Tunç Sawyer.
Izmir Governor Yavuz Selim Keshger added: “At present, there have been no adverse events in our province due to the 5.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Urla.”
We will remind that last year in the end of October Izmir suffered a strong earthquake – magnitude of 7 points. Many houses were destroyed, the ancient city center was covered by a real tsunami, the death toll was about 20 people and more than 700 injured.
However, experts predict Turkey and the worst disasters from seismic activity: only in August, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said that the city risks severe damage from the strongest earthquake, which will have enormous devastating consequences – will affect at least a third of the buildings of the former Constantinople.
