Archaeologists have discovered a temple to the ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite underwater off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reported.
The discovery of the ancient temple, dating back to the 5th century, was made by a joint Egyptian-French archaeological mission working underwater in the sunken ancient city of Heraklion in the Gulf of Abu Qir.
Inside the temple, they found bronze and ceramic objects brought from Greece.
Scientists believe that Heraklion was built in the 8th century BC. e. It was the largest trading center and port of Ancient Egypt and went underwater about 1,200 years ago. Archaeologists discovered the city in 2000.
