Spain has decided: fewer tourists means more money

“Less tourists – more money” – this is the strategy of the Mediterranean country, once beloved by tourists. We are talking about Spain, which was recently considered one of the biggest destinations for mass tourism. However, representatives of the local tourism market say that they will now demand more income from tourism at the expense of receiving fewer tourists.

According to the Spanish press, citing the statements of industry representatives from the Travel Talk congress in Germany, the success of the strategy is most obvious in the example of the German market. Although the number of German tourists decreased by almost 9% compared to the “year-over-year” figures for 2019, at the same time, visitor spending increased by 5.5%.

“We have no intention of competing with other destinations due to cheaper prices. We want to develop our tourism infrastructure and offer the Spanish model of life,” said Turespaña director Alvaro Blanco.

Moreover, the emphasis for such tourists is supposed to be made not on beach tourism, but on the possibilities of mainland Spain.

Beach and “inexpensive” tourists who prefer package tours were unambiguously “sent” in a speech at the same congress, having also determined the direction. “Particularly price-sensitive” tourists may prefer Turkey, Spanish experts said.
