Spanish authorities have banned smoking on the country’s beaches. The relevant law was adopted at the end of December 2021.
The ban on smoking on the beaches was introduced after local residents filed a petition that received almost 300,000 votes. Citizens demanded to strengthen measures to combat beach pollution.
They believe that cigarette butts are bad for the environment because they contain a non-degradable plastic polymer. Also, these wastes pollute the soil and harm marine life.
Violators of the new law face a fine of 2,000 euros.
Recall that earlier smoking on the beaches was banned in a number of regions of European countries, for example, on the island of Sardinia and in some areas of southern France.
