At least 34 people have died in recent days due to a snowstorm and severe frosts in the United States in recent days, the Associated Press reports.
A snow storm hit most of the states of the country. According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), more than 200 million Americans in 48 states have received advisories or warnings of an increased level of weather danger. The weather service’s map “displays one of the most extensive winter weather warnings and advisories on record” – covering an unprecedented area from the Great Lakes in the north of the country to the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico.
Roads are prohibited in New York State. Airlines across the country have canceled nearly 10,000 flights since December 23.
Power grids have skyrocketed, with nearly 2 million homes without power, half of them in New York and Maine.
The height of snowdrifts in some places exceeds a meter, the wind reaches hurricane force. Due to drifts on the roads, even rescue vehicles get stuck. People freeze in their homes and die without waiting for an ambulance.
