A two-week vacation has advantages over a weekly one: it lasts longer. But scientific research shows that a person will remember unique events. Therefore, additional days do not matter, reports Ferra.
According to psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, a short vacation is just as good as a long one. And sometimes even better.
Studies of human memory show that sometimes after a vacation, we don’t care how many days the break lasted. Only the moments that gave rise to memories become essential.
In general, a person has two varieties of “I”. It is “I sentient” and “I remember”. The first is related to what we feel in the present moment, and the second – is to what we remember. And happiness depends on the latter.
Since feelings of happiness and satisfaction depend on what memories we have after a vacation, a long vacation is a waste of time and money.
If you want to act for the sake of “I sentient”, then you can choose a long vacation. However, as Kahneman says, if you want to be satisfied with the moments you have experienced in the long run, then it is better to take a short vacation. The brain remembers well the moments when something significant or new happens. A two-week vacation is unlikely to be constantly filled with such moments. And in terms of memory and retention of memories, a long vacation will bring the same result as a 7-day one.
