The Greek island of Delos is at risk of flooding due to rising sea levels, Greek television ERT reported. The small island is part of the Cyclades group of islands and is located to the west of Mykonos.
It is associated with the god Apollo and Artemis, the twins of Zeus and Leto, who, according to ancient Greek myths and legends, were raised on it to hide from Hera.
The island is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to a French public television report, the island of Delos is in danger of disappearing due to rising sea levels and corrosion of the earth’s surface.
The report says that in a hundred years the level of the Mediterranean Sea has risen by 50-100 cm, and the northerly winds blowing in the Delos region exacerbate the problem. There are fears that by 2050 the island may disappear.
According to Kostas Sinolakis, director of the National Environment Commission, sea levels will continue to rise. He added that all this is a consequence of climate change.
Experts point out that Delos is not the only endangered island in the region, as there is a danger to other islands and coastal areas in the Aegean Sea.
