The Italian government is carefully considering a wide range of precautions in case of evacuation of tourists and residents.
Italy is actively developing an evacuation strategy covering both travelers and residents in the event of a potential eruption of the Phlegrean Fields supervolcano.
The volcano is located just 20 kilometers from Naples and attracts tourists with its picturesque Amalfi coast. Over the past month, about 1,100 earthquakes have occurred here. There is a risk of eruption.
Campi Flegrei is bordered by towns and villages including Pozzuoli, Agnano, and Bacoli, and in total is home to more than 500,000 people.
The government is taking several precautions, including inspecting building structures in the area and planning large-scale evacuations, especially in light of recent earthquakes and natural disasters.
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said evacuations would only be carried out in cases of “extreme necessity.” Authorities are also strengthening local civil defense resources and launching information campaigns to prepare the population.
Italy has faced various natural disasters this year, including floods in the Emilia-Romagna region. Tourists traveling to Italy are advised to purchase travel insurance to ensure they are protected in case of emergency.
