Virtually any country in the world has fancy names for dishes that are difficult to explain and understand to foreigners, and Germany is no exception. The tourist listed in her blog 10 German delicacies that sound strange, make uninformed travelers shudder and refuse to try.
In Ukraine, everyone is already used to such dishes as herring under a fur coat, potatoes in a coat, and zucchini caviar, and only foreigners can ask the question: “Why fish in a fur coat, and potatoes in a coat?” and “How do zucchini spawn?”. In Germany, the situation is approximately the same. Only the names are sometimes wilder and completely incomprehensible to foreigners.
False Hare – Falscher Hase. The dish has nothing to do with hares and rabbits, and their meat is not included. It is a meat roll made from a mixture of minced pork and beef, to which salt and pepper, boiled eggs, onions, breadcrumbs, and breadcrumbs are added and then baked.
The cry of cats – Katzengeschrei. Also unrelated to cats. To prepare a dish, Germans take the first products from the refrigerator, for example, pasta, vegetables, and sausages, and then fry them in a pan with the addition of eggs, pickles, and spices.
Half Rooster – Halber Hahn – and Strong Max – Strammer Max. These are the names of sandwiches. In “Half of a Rooster” – there is mustard, cheese, and pickled cucumbers, in “Max” – is ham and fried egg.
Dead Grandmother – Tote Oma. Outwardly, it resembles bloody porridge, it is made from Grützwurst blood sausage and served with boiled potatoes and sauerkraut.
Dead aunt – Tote Tante. This is a dessert based on hot chocolate with rum and whipped cream.
Gummiadler – Gummiadler. This is a common name for fried chicken in southern Germany and Austria.
Liver cheese – Leberkäse. “As you probably guessed, there is no liver or cheese in this dish,” the blogger quips in her article. This is the name of a meatloaf made from beef and pork, which is a favorite of the Bavarians.
Hand cheese with music – Handkäse mit Musik. This is a dish of Hessian cuisine based on handmade cheese. The music is provided by onions marinated in apple cider vinegar with pepper and cumin, located on top.
Cold dog – Kalter Hund. It’s an innocent chocolate and cookie dessert that’s kind of like a chocolate sausage.
