Three foreign tourists have died in a tropical resort in the Bahamas after contracting an unknown disease. Another was taken to hospital by plane in critical condition. Everyone has the same symptoms. According to The Guardian, citing a statement from the resort’s health minister, the Bahamas is investigating the cause of what happened to convince travelers that their country does not pose a threat to public health and does not threaten the world with a new outbreak.
According to Acting Prime Minister of the Bahamas Chester Cooper, the dead – American tourists. The head of the communications department of the Prime Minister’s Office, Latre L. Raming, wrote on Twitter that the travelers had died at the 5-star Sandals Emerald Bay Hotel in Exumi. The resort is known as an adult-only resort with 11 restaurants and a golf course overlooking a secluded beach area that attracts tourists with its turquoise waters and white sand.
According to Health Minister Michael Darville, several hotel guests went to the clinic on Thursday with complaints of nausea and vomiting. They were prescribed treatment and released. However, three were later found dead and a fourth was hospitalized.
Police and medical officials have joined the investigation to make sure there is no danger to public health in the Atlantic island nation. “We believe that what we see is an isolated case related to a certain area,” the minister reassured, adding that investigators were conducting a toxicological examination and taking blood samples to determine the cause of the disease. “Both had signs of convulsions,” officials said in a statement. A hotel spokesman confirmed the death in a statement to People magazine, saying the company was “actively working to support both the investigation and the families of the guests in all possible ways.”
