Mount Merapi erupted in Indonesia for the second time in a month. The authorities closed a major airport to avoid loss of life, Anadolu reports.
There have been no reports of civilian casualties or damage to infrastructure yet. However, authorities recommend that residents and tourists stay away from the volcano area.
In early December, the eruption of Mount Merapi killed 23 people, including 11 tourists. Another 50 climbers were rescued from the disaster zone.
Merapi, located on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
Indonesia lies on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common. There are almost 130 active volcanoes throughout Indonesia.
