A video of a woman atop a 1000-year-old Buddha statue in China has outraged local authorities and sparked outrage online. The unique building is not only a treasure of Buddhist culture but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A popular landmark in China’s Sichuan province is the tallest sculpture in the world, the Leshan Buddha Statue. Its height is 70 meters. The locals call it the “Buddha of the Mountain”.
Millions of tourists come here every year from all over the world to touch the shrine and take a couple of photos, but one woman went further.
She decided to conquer not only the peak of enlightenment but also the top of the 70-meter statue. The trick of a visitor to the temple was caught on video and scattered across all social networks,” the media write.
The footage shows a woman dressed in white climbing over a protective railing and beginning to meditate in front of an astonished crowd. According to eyewitnesses, in the end, the tourist went down and was taken away by the local police.
“The place where the woman climbed is fenced off by high protective railings, through which tourists are not allowed to climb under any circumstances. The commission is currently investigating the incident,” the committee for the protection of the sculpture commented on the situation.
Some netizens suggested that the woman is looking for popularity on social networks. Others suspect that the reason for this behavior could serve as a mental disorder.
