A British tourist was raped while on holiday in India in front of her partner, according to local media.
Police investigating the incident say the woman was on a beach in Goa when a man attacked her on June 2.
The woman filed a formal complaint after consulting her family and the British Embassy in India.
Police say they have arrested a 32-year-old man on charges of raping a woman in North Goa.
A man is accused of raping a woman on the pretext that he gave her a massage while she was with her husband.
According to local media reports, he is part of a group offering illegal massages near the popular tourist resort of Arambol.
A senior police officer told NDTV that the suspect also worked as a school librarian in the past. “We contacted the relevant police department to get his past files. He is not currently working as a librarian,” the official said.
According to the information, the victim and the accused were sent to the hospital for a medical examination.
A British Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing consular support to a British citizen in Goa.”
Nearly 300,000 Britons visited Goa in 2018, according to the latest figures, with UK travelers being the second-largest group of foreign holidaymakers in the region. Goa’s tropical climate and fantastic beaches are the main attraction for vacationers.
