The Italian authorities have proposed imposing a fine of up to 60,000 euros for people who damage monuments or other cultural sites.
At the initiative of the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, under the new legislation, fines will be used to pay for repairs and cleaning.
“Attacks on monuments and art are causing economic damage to everyone,” Sangiuliano said in a statement.
Fines for vandalism will start from 10,000 euros and can reach 60,000 euros.
The government approved the plans at a cabinet meeting on April 11, and the bill is expected to be approved and become law.
