From September, it will be difficult for tourists to see the main symbol of Greece. As planned, strict restrictions were introduced for tourists – now admission to the Acropolis is allowed only according to quotas with reservations. In general, the legendary museum will receive a maximum of 20,000 tourists per day. The number of people in the historic area at any one time will also be limited.
As the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated in the Greek press, thanks to this statement, the historical monument will be in the best possible safety. In turn, tourists will not crowd in terrible queues at the entrance through the propylaea of the Acropolis and will get the best experience.
Also, tourists can now visit the Acropolis only by prior reservation. We will remind you that back in August, the Greek government confirmed that visits to the Acropolis of Athens will be limited to 20,000 people per day and hourly restrictions on visits will be introduced. Moreover, a “trial version” was launched in September, and it is planned to be launched permanently in April 2024, that is, with the beginning of the next season.
As the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni explained, the control is necessary to prevent the accumulation of people and queues in “narrow places” at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to her, every day up to 23,000 tourists literally squeeze into the monument complex, and mostly large groups visit it before noon. “This is a huge number. Tourism is desirable for the country and for all of us, but we have to decide how excessive tourism will not harm the monument,” she added.
