It became known when Venice will start charging tourists to enter the city

Venice city authorities have set the dates in 2024 when tourists will be charged the previously announced entrance fee.

According to CNN, it is about 29 days between April and mid-July 2024. In particular, those who will come to the city for one day from April 26 to May 5 will have to pay, then the fee will be charged every Saturday and Sunday until July 14. This time is considered the peak tourist period of Venice.

How will the entrance fee to Venice work

The fee, which will be a fixed amount of €5, will be charged to anyone entering the city without an overnight reservation (or exemption from it) between 8:30 and 16:00.

The program will be managed through an online platform that will generate tickets with a QR code confirming payment or waiver. There will also be toll booths in the city.

All visitors to the city, including those claiming to be exempt from paying the fee, must register online from January 16, 2024.

Who should pay

All tourists aged 14 and older who do not stay in the city overnight will have to pay. But even those staying the night will have to register online to receive a QR code confirming their release.

They will be exempted from paying the fee

  • residents of the city and people born in Venice
  • people who own real estate in the city
  • students and people working in Venice
  • those who come to the city on business or for short-term study
  • tourists who stay overnight in the city, because they already pay the city tax
  • tourists staying overnight in the municipality of Venice outside the city limits
  • children under 14 and people with disabilities together with their guardians

All of them will have to register on the online platform to receive the corresponding QR code. For several categories, it will be valid throughout the year.

Those traveling to most of the lagoon’s islands, including the tourist centers of Murano and Burano, as well as the Lido, where the city’s beaches are located, will also be exempt from the fee. However, most visitors will have to pay a fee anyway, as they usually arrive on the islands on ferries from the city center.

Also, people transiting through Piazzale Roma (the bus terminus), Troncetto, or Marittima Station (where small cruise ships still dock) will not pay, unless they cross the “Old Town” border.

It should be noted that Venice became the first city in the world that decided to introduce an entrance fee for tourists. In this way, the city authorities want to encourage tourists who come to the city for the day to choose off-peak dates.
