Indonesia has launched AI-enabled biometric corridors in partnership with Amadeus, introducing a next-generation identity verification system that allows travelers to move through airport checkpoints without presenting physical documents.
Where the corridors are operating
Indonesia’s immigration authority has deployed:
-
two biometric corridors at Jakarta Airport,
-
one at Surabaya Airport.
Initially, the system will serve elderly and disabled travelers before expanding to the wider passenger flow nationwide.
How the system works
Enrollment is done via the government’s All Indonesia app, which consolidates immigration, customs, health and quarantine declarations. Travelers can share passport details in advance, allowing authorities to run background checks before they arrive at the airport.
During Hajj, when 220,000 travelers flew between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, the system demonstrated impressive performance:
-
more than 30 border crossings per minute —
a tenfold increase compared to biometric eGates.
“The jewel in the crown of seamless travel”
Rudy Daniello, EVP Airport Operations at Amadeus, said:
“The Seamless Corridor removes friction, queues and document checks. It finally enables a fully secure, truly seamless airport experience.”
Sinergi Teknoglobal Perkasa, Amadeus’ local partner, emphasized that the initiative blends global expertise with local innovation to support Indonesia’s long-term vision for smart and secure travel.
The new system is considered an evolution of earlier biometric projects such as Dubai’s biometric path and Frankfurt’s AI-powered scanners — but with a major upgrade: Indonesia’s solution eliminates the need for eGates entirely, enabling a fully free-flow corridor.
