Hotels in Turkey found themselves in a severe deficit and began to steal from each other. However, it is not about financial means or equipment – the most relevant resource turned out to be personnel.
This was stated in the Turkish press by Mustafa Kylych, the chairman of the board of directors of the L’Oceanica Beach Resort hotel. Optimistically assessing the return of tourists, which exceeded demand by 30% compared to the “pre-Vivid” level of 2019, he added that this also led to its problems.
“The personnel shortage is at an extreme level,” Mr. Kylych said. He called it one of the main problems this year, along with the problems of rising energy prices and problems with loans under the current political conditions.
“Turkish youth generally do not want to work in the field of tourism. Everyone wants to be a manager or better – a director. Therefore, now when an employee receives 3 kurushi (that is, literally “three pennies”), he declares “I’m leaving.” And when the nearby hotel pays a little more, the employees immediately go there. As a result, hotels began to steal each other’s staff. It shouldn’t be like that, but, unfortunately, it is,” the hotelier described the situation.
He stated that the situation must be corrected as soon as possible, but it is not a fact that it can be corrected only by the Turks themselves. “The state should intervene in this matter. We should be given a little more tolerance for the involvement of foreign personnel,” Mr. Kylych assessed.
