Early on Thursday morning, an accident occurred in a residential area of Augusta, Georgia (USA): a plane crashed, resulting in the death of the pilot.
According to Atlanta News First, the name of the deceased has not yet been released. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine Beechcraft 36 crashed around 7:10 a.m. local time.
The plane, carrying only the pilot, had taken off from Daniel Field and was returning to the airfield when it struck a tree and crashed, officials said. It is reported that the first call about the incident came in at 7:14 am when the police had not yet arrived at the accident scene.
One of the residents who lives across the road said that he did not see the moment of the crash, but noticed a flash of fire. He then ran into the house to call emergency services. People who rushed to the scene noted that they saw a large amount of smoke and thought that there was a fire in a residential building.
One neighbor said he heard the sound of a low-flying plane, followed by a loud explosion. Another resident, living two streets from the crash site, noted that he did not hear anything and learned about what happened from the news, after which he came to the scene of the accident.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation. The NTSB will reportedly lead it and report on the results.
