In June 2023, a new pedestrian suspension bridge will open in the Black Forest – near the picturesque Todtnau waterfall, reports Deutsche Welle.
Waterfall is a loose and varied concept. The lists of such natural attractions in Germany include waterfalls that are more than one and a half meters high – in addition to several other criteria. There are about five hundred of them here. Most of all – in the Alps and the Black Forest.
Among the most famous and frequently visited waterfalls of the Black Forest is the 97-meter Todtnauer Wasserfall, which is also the Todtnau waterfall, located near the air resort of the same name, about 30 kilometers from Freiburg.

This picturesque waterfall, which arose during the last ice age, consists of five steps. The first two are small, several meters each, then – 12 meters, then – the 60-meter main step, and the last – four meters.
The source of the mountain stream that forms this waterfall is located in the Black Forest at a height of 1380 meters. Todtnau is located at an altitude of approximately 660 meters.

Several hundred thousand visitors come here every year. Until now, the main observation deck was located at the bottom of the waterfall – a few minutes walk from the car park near the town of Todtnauberg on the L126 highway.
In June 2023, a new opportunity to admire this amazing sight will appear here – the Blackforestline Todtnau pedestrian suspension bridge with a length of 450 meters will be put into operation.
In 1987, the Todtnau waterfall was included in the list of natural monuments and taken under state protection. In the XVIII century, silver ore was mined in these places. Nearby was one of these mountain adits – Hangloch (“Hole in the slope“ – Hangloch), from which the second name of this Black Forest attraction comes – Hangloch-Wasserfall.
We also note that about an hour’s drive from Todtnau is another such attraction of the Black Forest – a 160-meter cascade of waterfalls in the resort of Triberg – Triberger Wasserfälle.
