As security in connection with the continuation of nightlife in Thailand for tourists, it was decided to urgently create sobering rooms. As Thaiger reports, the National Liquor Policy Committee has decided that after pubs and restaurants extend their opening hours until 4 a.m. on December 15, it is necessary to establish sobering stations and take measures to prevent drunk driving.
Please note that it is already planned to extend the hours of entertainment establishments in all popular tourist destinations, including Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, Bangkok, and Samui. It will also be extended to hotels across the country.
“This corresponds to the state policy aimed at stimulating the economy. But night establishments are obliged to strictly follow the rules, especially the Law on entertainment establishments and Article 29 of the Law on the Control of Alcoholic Beverages,” experts told the publication.
At the same time, Santi Promphat, Deputy Minister of Health, said that in pubs and bars, owners will be required to conduct breathalyzer tests for customers who intend to drive a car while intoxicated. Drinking establishments are also required to give places to drivers whose blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limit of 50 milligrams per deciliter so that they can sober up.
“Customers must remain in these designated areas until they can drive. If the customers decide not to wait, the operators of the establishment are obliged to contact their friends or relatives to take them home or provide transportation at the expense of the customers,” said a Thai official. The feasibility of such a decision raises many questions.
