Many small fish that jump out of the water and literally “overwhelm” blind tourists were recorded in Thailand in Mu Ko Lanta National Park on the island of Lanta Yai on the bridge connecting the pier with the mainland. According to the locals, “thousands of small fish” attacked the bridge at the same time, and this is a stunning sight, although not for those who find themselves in the middle of the “hurricane”.
As Sunan Madsaron, a resident of Krabi, told local media, this fish is called Ta Mau, or cat’s eye fish, on the island. It usually lives in shallow water near the shore – and sometimes the fish jumps onto land. Residents collect it in bags – for fertilizer, as well as to prepare food from them.
As explained by the Krabi Fisheries Department, the cat’s eye fish periodically jumps ashore during spawning, which falls precisely in March and November. According to him, it is still not clear why these fish jump out of the water, there is a suggestion that fish that move in a tight shoal may jump out of the water at the same time when there is not enough oxygen.
