The first ever case of human infection with the simian herpes virus has been recorded in Hong Kong.
At the end of February, a 37-year-old man was attacked and bitten by a monkey while relaxing in Jinshan Park.
The patient is currently in the intensive care unit of one of the city’s hospitals in critical condition.
According to the Hong Kong Health Centre, the disease can present in humans with flu-like symptoms that can progress to infection of the central nervous system. However, person-to-person transmission of the virus is extremely rare.
