Many countries are introducing or increasing tourist tax. But in Greece, it was also disguised with a noble name, moreover, it was increased many times over. According to the Greek press, the name of the housing tax has been changed to the “climate change resilience fee” and its rate has been seriously increased.
At the same time, the law will enter into force on January 1, 2024. According to the new version, tourists will have to pay much more “for sustainability”. Thus, in the high season from March to October, the room fee, which under the previous law was 1.5 euros, will increase to 10 euros, and in the “off-season” from November to March, instead of 0.5 euros, you will have to pay 4 euros.
Also, the authorities intend, as in other countries, to fight against illegal short-term housing rentals. Anyone who fails to register on the government’s online registry for rentals of less than 60 days must pay a fine of 50% of the previous year’s gross income and no less than €5,000. At the same time, short-term rentals will be subject to an accommodation tax in the amount of 0.5% of income per night.
