With the beginning of the summer season in Egypt, one of the main attractions will be closed – the famous Cheops pyramid, the largest and oldest of the three pyramids of Giza, will be closed for restoration. According to ATOR, which, in turn, refers to the decision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, the Pyramid of Cheops will be closed to visitors for restoration from June. At the same time, the date of completion of the works has not yet been named. Tourists were also scared by the price increase, but it will happen in December.
We will remind you that the famous pyramid of Cheops is the largest and oldest of the three Great Pyramids, its initial height is almost 147 meters. Its age is estimated to be approximately 4.5 thousand years. Interestingly, the mummy of the pharaoh, for whom this pyramid was built 20 years, has never been found.
According to the statement of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the pyramid will be closed in June. This will be the next stage of the regular maintenance program at the Giza pyramids. Five years ago, the pyramid of Khafre – the “second” of the pyramids – underwent the same restoration. There, the restorers updated the lighting system and also strengthened the corridors visited by tourists and the burial chamber.
Tourists are also promised not to be left without original excursion routes during the closing of the pyramid. The smallest and last of the three pyramids – the Mykerin Pyramid – will be opened to visitors. Although it is much smaller – its total volume is only 260 thousand m³: this is only a tenth of the volume of the Cheops pyramid, but in ancient times it was considered the most beautiful structure in Egypt. For tourists, visiting it also has its advantages: a wider path to the burial chambers is laid here, and they are more spacious than in the Cheops pyramid, in addition, on the excursion route inside the pyramid, tourists can see niches with carved decorative panels.
Another unpleasant news from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt is timed all ready for the winter season. From December 1, visits to some archaeological monuments and museums in the country will be increased. Although it has not yet been announced which objects will be on this list, but judging by discussions in the Egyptian media, the Giza Pyramid Complex and other monuments of Ancient Egypt, such as Luxor and Abu Simbel, will definitely be among the main candidates for price increases .
