According to Reuters, the temperature in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China has dropped sharply: the air temperature dropped from +1.6 °C to -52.3 °C in two days. This became a temperature record in the entire history of meteorological observations.
The first victims of the bad weather were birds: on one of the lakes, thousands of birds were immediately frozen into the ice.
According to the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, 43 sections of roads have already been blocked in the provinces of Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.
The National Weather Service warned that severe frosts in the country will last until February 22. In addition, cold snaps may hit northeastern China, central Hubei province, and Hunan in the south.
