The Icelandic authorities have decided to introduce a tourist tax. However, when it will begin to act and what it will be like is still unknown.
The money that will be collected from foreigners is planned to be spent on implementing projects in the field of ecology and sustainable development.
“Tourism in Iceland has really grown exponentially over the last decade, and this obviously has an impact on the climate,” said Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir.
The Icelandic authorities are already collaborating with travel companies to make life in the country environmentally friendly – for example, they are switching all transport to electric. And this is not the only project they plan to implement together.
Tourist taxes in popular countries and cities are common practice. They are already operating in many locations in Europe and Asia.
