According to Redaktions Netzwerk Deutschland (RND), the energy crisis and inflation are creating serious problems for German restaurant and hotel owners. To reduce the increased costs, entrepreneurs introduce an additional fee for electricity and heating.
According to the publication, more hotels and restaurants are introducing a flat surcharge of 3-9 euros per night, in an attempt to “pass at least some of the additional costs” onto the shoulders of visitors.
For example, the Bareiss 5* hotel in Bairsbronn in Baden-Württemberg charges 9 euros more per person per night from September and also reserves the right to further increase the fee. At The Hearts Hotel, a boutique hotel in the Braunlage resort in Lower Saxony, guests pay an extra EUR 3 per day for electricity.
According to RND, the same situation has developed in the restaurant business in Germany. For example, the restaurant Zum Grünen Hof in the vicinity of Bremen charges an additional 1.5 euros for each visitor. At the same time, according to the owner, guests are willing to pay even more if it helps to keep the establishment running.
