Autumn holidays in Germany ensured the filling of hotels, guesthouses and tourist apartments in October. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 43.3 million overnight stays of foreign and local guests in October represent an increase of 30.3 percent over the same month last year.
However, the total number of overnight stays was still 5.1 percent lower than in October 2019, before the coronavirus crisis.
The number of overnight stays by domestic guests increased by 24.2 percent to 38.6 million. This is even 1.8 percent higher than in October 2019. Thus, there is still a strong trend towards domestic holidays in Germany. However, further setbacks loomed over the tour sector in Germany due to the fourth wave of the Crown and the emergence of the Omicron variant.
The number of overnight stays by foreign guests in October increased by 118.9 percent to 4.7 million. However, this is significantly lower than the pre-crisis level – only 38.8%.
Hotels, inns and guesthouses accounted for just under 60 percent of overnight stays in October. Tourist apartments and similar accommodations accounted for almost 23 percent of overnight stays, followed by other tourism-related accommodation at 11 percent and campgrounds at 6 percent. It should be noted that, compared to October of the pre-crisis 2019, the number of overnight stays in campsites increased by 28 percent.
In contrast, the number of overnight stays in hotels, inns and guesthouses decreased by 11 percent. “Here we can assume a shift associated with measures to prevent the spread of infection, since low contact accommodation is easier to implement in campsites and similar places for recreation than in other accommodation,” – explained this trend statistics.
