To avoid the history of overtourism experienced by other popular European tourist destinations, Greece has offered foreign tourists seven new islands they don’t yet know about. These are Naxos, Kythira, Ithaca, Ikaria, Karpathos, Samothrace and Lychadonisia.
After Greece’s resounding success in the tourism sector this year, with the number of holidaymakers in the country surpassing 2019’s pre-2019 numbers, Greek tourism authorities have been concerned about overtourism looming over certain parts of the country – an influx of travelers taking up every available property and thereby making the life of local residents is unbearable.
According to EuroNews.Travel, in recent years the Greek island in the southern part of the Aegean Sea has become a popular tourist destination and a must-see for travelers. Greek tourism officials have also told tourists that there is much more to discover in the resort country than just the well-known island resorts, including Santorini and other attractive islands. If travelers heed the advice, it will help avoid overcrowding and make the tourist experience in the country more pleasant.
“We are discussing not only the conservation of natural resources or the protection of the environment. For us, sustainable development is something else,” Dimitris Fragakis, Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), said in this regard, adding that the authorities also encourage not only geographical dispersion of vacationers, but also temporary ones. In other words, the official urged foreign tourists to come to Greece not only in the summer, but also in the rest of the year, but in this case the “beachgoers” will have nothing to do…
As for the island of Naxos, which is part of the Cyclades group of islands, travelers can enjoy its fertile valleys and high mountains, where they can combine a relaxing and adventurous holiday. Naxos, being the largest island of the archipelago, is also a great place for foodies and offers various beaches.
At the same time, if vacationers decided to find peace and quiet, Kythira is one of the isolated islands of the Ionian archipelago of Greece, and tourism there is relatively poorly developed. Nevertheless, the island is known for its wild nature and natural waterfalls that create an idyllic landscape, so it can be of interest to the category of travelers who are not chasing rich tourist infrastructure. In addition to these two islands, all those travelers who want to spend the summer more relaxed and separate from the crowd as much as possible are recommended to visit the other islands mentioned above.
Greece is a resort country that offers world-class resorts. For example, readers of America’s oldest magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, ranked it sixth in terms of the best travel destinations this year. Greece dominates the list of choices as the best holiday destination among different countries in the world, scoring 89.97 points.
