Another ban on sanctions fell on the Russian aviation industry – this time from “friendly” Turkey. Since November 1, the authorities of this country have banned Russian aircraft with dual registration (ie registered in two jurisdictions) from flying through its airspace. As a result, airliners flying to Egypt have to fly around the territory of Turkey, which lengthens the flight by about 30 minutes. The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation promises to look into the situation.
As the general director of the tour operator Pegas Touristik, a member of the board of directors of the Nordwind airline Hanna Pidhirna told RBC, the ban came into force a week ago – on November 1. Due to this situation, the duration of flights to Egypt increased by 20-30 minutes.
The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation also commented on the situation, stating that they intend to “negotiate with Turkey on this issue” shortly. The department also stated that the main problem with aircraft deregistration is the delay on the part of Bermuda, where some of the Russian liners are registered.
“To exclude violations of the provisions of the Chicago Convention, Bermuda needs to exclude from its register aircraft registered and operated in the Russian Federation. The relevant requests were sent by the Russian carriers to the address of the Bermuda aviation authorities. And delaying the deregistration of aircraft by the Bermuda air registry is a gross violation of the Chicago Convention,” said the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
