The Paris authorities have decided to hold a referendum to decide the fate of electric scooters in the city. Residents voted for the ban.
This decision was made due to the large number of accidents with electric scooters: in the first half of 2022, 330 accidents were registered, which is 37% more than in the same period of 2021.
The referendum was held on 2 April. 103 thousand people participated in it. 89% voted against it.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that the new law will come into effect on September 1.
Paris, by the way, is not the only city in which the authorities decide what to do with electric scooters. Other European cities are also coming up with ways to keep their residents safe. So, for example, in Lisbon, an electric scooter cannot accelerate more than twenty kilometers per hour, and in Ljubljana – only five. In Warsaw, it is forbidden to enter parks and gardens. In Italy, some even have to take driving courses.
