The subject of the “admission” of Russian currency to Egypt to attract Russian tourists, or rather the refutation of this fact, “surfaced” again in the media. Egyptian media, citing bank sources, claim that the Central Bank of Egypt categorically denied reports that Egypt plans to start accepting ruble payments from Russian visitors at the end of this month.
“It is impossible to use the Russian ruble in Egypt, and we are not aware of specific plans to introduce it into circulation,” the source said. It will be recalled that earlier some “bank employees” also denied the issuance of a circular announcing the use of the Russian ruble instead of the US dollar. “This happened after the head of the tourism committee of the Egyptian parliament, Nora Ali, favorably commented on the Central Bank’s decision to approve the use of the Russian ruble in the list of main currencies used in local banks,” the media reported.
We will also remind you that according to the available data, the country’s authorities are currently in the process of discussing – to what extent and how to “allow” the Russian currency. A decision can be expected at the end of September. At the same time, Egypt plans to allow the use of the “MIR” card as well – read the details here.
It should be noted that the following statement was made earlier: “According to information from the Central Bank of Egypt available to TEZ TOUR, from the end of September 2022, the Russian ruble will be included in the list of currencies used in the country. This period coincides with the beginning of the high season on the route.”
