Cyprus has unveiled the world’s first interactive museum guide powered by artificial intelligence, marking a milestone in the fusion of culture and technology.
The project, developed by researchers from the Cyprus University of Technology and the Eratosphenes Centre of Excellence, was officially introduced this week, according to Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC).
Named “Tefkros”, after a legendary figure from Cypriot mythology, the robot serves as both a storyteller and an educator. Using advanced AI algorithms, it can adjust its explanations based on the visitor’s age, curiosity, and prior knowledge, offering a personalized cultural experience.
Its most striking feature is a digital animated face capable of displaying realistic emotions such as smiling, curiosity, amusement, or surprise. Developers say this helps make the museum experience more engaging and emotionally connected for guests.
“Tefkros” is made entirely with 3D printing technology using durable polymer materials, and its design was inspired by ancient Cypriot art.
The robot’s first assignment is at the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coins, where it will begin guiding visitors in the coming days. In the future, “Tefkros” will expand its presence to other museums, exhibitions, and educational programs in schools, helping students explore history through technology.
