Bhutan Sees a Tourism Boom: Arrivals Surge 39% in 2025

Bhutan — one of the world’s most exclusive and tightly regulated destinations — is experiencing a remarkable tourism revival. Between January and October 2025, the Himalayan kingdom welcomed 161,512 visitors, marking a 39% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

October alone set a new record with 25,725 tourists, confirming a strong upward trend. Indian travellers remain the largest segment, while international arrivals from the U.S., U.K., Germany and China are growing steadily.

The surge is largely attributed to Bhutan’s rising global appeal as a sustainable and culturally rich destination. The country’s famous “Gross National Happiness” philosophy, strict environmental policies and well-preserved traditions draw travellers seeking authenticity and tranquility.

Another key factor is the government’s decision to reduce the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) from USD 200 to 100 per night, making Bhutan more accessible while preserving its exclusivity.
