After a shark attack on a Russian in Hurghada, tourists began to wonder what waters predators often attack, how to protect themselves, and what to do if, nevertheless, the danger could not be avoided. The editors have prepared answers to the most popular questions.
The Florida Museum in the United States collects information on shark attacks from around the world. Last year, 89 bites were recorded, of which 57 were not provoked by a person, and another 32 were caused by human behavior. A total of nine people died. Most of the accidental human-shark contacts occurred in the United States – 41 incidents. This is followed by Australia (9 cases), two each recorded in Egypt and South Africa, and one each in Brazil, New Zealand, and Thailand.
Over the entire history of observations (from about the beginning of the 19th century), the top leaders look like this: the United States of America (1604), Australia (691), and South Africa (260). Egypt is ranked 12th with 24 incidents. The second ten also includes Greece, India, Italy, and Cuba.
Scientists conclude that the number of lethal and non-fatal cases is falling. This is a long-term trend strongly influenced by climate change. The number of such emergencies in the world is extremely small, given the enormous volume of people who choose to vacation at sea.
However, do not forget about precautions. No need to swim alone far from the shore. Sandbanks are especially dangerous. At dusk and night, swimming is also undesirable, since at this time the sharks are most active. Predators have a great sense of the smell of blood, so if there is an open wound, then you should refrain from swimming. It is not recommended to wear shiny jewelry and clothes and swim in the water area where fish are fed.
If the attack happened, then you need to act actively. “Sharks respect size and strength,” the scientists write. Ideally, you should hit her on the nose with something heavy. This will stop the attack. In the time won, it is necessary to swim with all your might to the shore. It is worth remembering: each hit will be less effective. If the fish continues to bite, then it is necessary to scratch the eyes and gills.
