With the return of mass tourism, “anti-tourism” activists began to return. The beaches and restaurants of the country popular with tourists have become the target of anti-tourism activists – their struggle has resumed in Spain. Protesters attacked the most popular tourist spots in the Balearic Islands and the mainland. The offices of real estate agents were also attacked.
“This summer, beaches, restaurants, and estate agents have been attacked by radical anti-tourism groups across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. Experts told the Times that Majorca and Barcelona, Spain’s two most popular tourist destinations, are often targeted by protest groups such as Arran.
At their demonstrations, activists carry placards with the slogans “You are not welcome here” and “Tourism kills.”
There are also more “creative” actions. So, in Majorca, groups of protesters decorated the beaches with posters in English, which allegedly warned about jellyfish, landslides, and sewage. Other signs indicated that the beaches were closed. At the same time, the posters hung nearby explained in Catalan that there was no danger and that there was a protest action in front of the tourists.
