Another country, already expensive to visit, has decided to tax tourists. All explained by the fight for the climate. We are talking about Iceland.
The authorities of this country said that they plan to charge a tax on tourists arriving in Iceland – this, as told by the local press.
As experts assure you, over the past decade, tourism in Iceland has grown exponentially, and this has an impact not only on the climate. In 2022 alone, more than 8.5 million people visited it. Also, according to Statistics Iceland, a total of 1,176,600 overnight stays were recorded in Iceland in June 2023 alone, a 17% increase from June 2022
Meanwhile, Iceland’s Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said that the tariff will not be high and will be charged as a city tax for those staying in Iceland.
She also confirmed that Iceland will continue to pursue the concept of “slow” tourism, and “incentivize fewer people to take longer trips.” The country also intends to “cool down mass tourism trends”.
