Air and ferry traffic in Greece will be interrupted on March 16 due to a 24-hour nationwide strike organized by several of the largest trade unions in the Balkan country, reports GTP Headlines.
The general strike is expected to lead to the cancellation of all domestic and international flights at Greek airports and the suspension of ferry services. During the day on March 16, only flights within the country, emergency landings, and search and rescue flights will be carried out.
Air traffic controllers and civil aviation workers will join the protest action. The strike will affect about 40 airports throughout the southern European country.
Trade unions are calling for improved safety in all modes of transport and accusing the government of inaction amid a deadly train derailment near the city of Larisa in the center of the country on February 28.
Those who have booked tickets for March 16 are advised to check with their travel agents or contact local seaport authorities for more information.
It is worth noting that public transport drivers have also announced a reduced work schedule. Buses and trolleybuses throughout Greece will make stops and operate only from 9:00 to 21:00. The electric railway, the Athens metro, and the tram will only run from 10:00 to 15:00.
Notably, school teachers and lawyers will also take part in the 24-hour strike, the source adds.
