After record snowfalls, Japan was covered with two-meter snowdrifts

According to the Kyodo news agency, Japan is suffering from heavy snowfall. In some parts of the country, the height of snowdrifts exceeded two meters.

According to energy company Tohoku Electric Power, at least 16,000 homes were left without electricity in regions along the coast of the Sea of Japan and the northeast of the main island of Honshu.

Niigata prefecture has been hit the hardest, with 11,000 households without electricity.

The movement of vehicles on highways is complex in the country, and some trains have been canceled.

Heavy snowfall hit Japan yesterday, December 18th. The depth of snow cover in several areas of Yamagata prefecture was 229 cm, in Aomori – 193 cm, Niigata – 170 cm, Hokkaido – 154 cm, and Fukushima – 148 cm.
